Re-Entry into Extended Foster Care


  • Youth must be informed of their right to re-enter extended foster care at their termination hearing.
  • Eligible youth can re-enter foster care an unlimited number of times until they turn 21.
  • The re-entry process is intended to be as accessible and easy as possible.


  • Youth signs voluntary re-entry agreement.
  • Aid begins on date youth signs agreement and resides in a qualified placement.
  • Initial meeting with social worker temporarily satisfies participation conditions. (Youth do not have to be working or in school to re-enter. This meeting temporarily satisfies the participation conditions until a long-term plan is established).
  • Agency has 15 days to file court petition.
