Winners Announced for JBAY College Hero Award

John Burton Advocates for Youth (JBAY) is presenting three individuals across the state with the 2017 College Hero Award, acknowledging their exceptional work in going above and beyond in their service to foster youth in higher education. Nominated by their peers, the three College Hero Award recipients are listed below:

Sara Gamez is the Associate Director of Student Support & Equity Programs, overseeing the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), the Renaissance Scholars Program, the Veterans Resource Center and the Undeclared Student Program at  California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Sara will be receiving her award at the Los Angeles graduation event on Wednesday, May 17.

Shanina Shumate is the Senior Coordinator for the b2b Program, which supports current and former foster and probation youth to enter and be successful at Laney College in Oakland. She is with Beyond Emancipation, an organization serving current and former foster youth in Alameda County and will be receiving her award at the Bay Area graduation event on Tuesday, May 23.

Dolores Cornejo is the Foster Youth Liaison/Coordinator for Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) for Fullerton College. She will be receiving her award at the San Diego graduation event on Wednesday, May 31.
